CRUCIFYRE interview

Crucifyre interview for Dark Recollections 2011

1. Dark Recollections: Hails.. for those not familiar with Crucifyre , introduce the band(who does what, plays what instruments?)

Crucifyre was formed in the icy winter of 2006. We play death and black metal they way it was meant to be. The band consist of Erik Tormentor Sahlström, vocals, TG, Guitar, Urban Skytt, Guitar, Doltz, Bass and me, Yasse on drums.

2. Dark Recollections: not much is known about the band give us a brief bio.

Crucifyre: I had some songs that I wanted to do something with. The first line up was completed in 2006. In 2007 we recorded the Thessalonian Death Cult demo. From that line up only me and TG remain. In 2008 Erik joined and we recorded our second demo, Hellish Sacrifice with Tobbe Sillman from Vicious Art on session guitar. 2009 Doltz and Urban completed the line up. In the fall, the same year we appeared on the Resurrected In Festering Slime compilation and played our first gig on the release party for that record in Stockholm.

3. Dark Recollections: how long has current line up been together?

Crucifyre: Since the spring of 2009.

4. Dark Recollections: was there a demo, promo, etc released prior to debut cd?

Crucifyre: Yes, like I said, there were two demos, Thessalonian Death Cult and Hellish Sacrifice. The second of the two is the better. On our first recording the vocals didn’t really cut it. We all did the vocals more or less on that recording. When Erik joined that changed the picture entirely.

5. Dark Recollections: talk about your debut Cd ” Infernal Earthly Divine”

Crucifyre: Our debut album was released in Europe in November last year and in the US on the 17th of January this year. The vinyl will be out next week as well. The drums were recorded at Cosmos studios in Stockholm. Lady Gaga and people like that record in the studio. It used to be EMI’s studio so you get the picture. I layed down the drums there. The drum sound is pretty fucking ass kicking. The Rest was recorded in our own studio and in a friend’s studio. Additional recordings were done at Cosmos as well as the mixing and mastering. We had to redo the rhythm guitars because they didn’t sound aggressive and raw enough. I’m glad we did because the end result is a lot better. The mix took a long time and was spread out during a lengthy period, which was a drag, but in the end it turned out pretty good.

6. Dark Recollections: who released debut Cd.., how did contract come about?

Crucifyre: Pulverised Records is our label. They are of course based in Asia. Erik had done some artwork for them so he kind of hooked us up or at least took the initial contact.

7. Dark Recollections: what is the song “the fetching” about, what inspired its lyrics?

Crucifyre: It is interesting that you should ask about that song. The Fetching describes the Norse mythological concept of the wild hunt. That song and Thessalonian Death Cult are the only songs to have lyrics linked to mythology. Generally I like to have lyrics that deal with reality and have some realism to them. That makes the evil subject of the lyrics more evil. For the most part our lyrics deal with evil in different forms and malevolence that has gone on throughout history. But back to your question, the wild hunt is when Odin comes at night riding across the skies with an army of the dead. Their quest is to collect someone from the sphere of the living, hence – the fetching. There is a famous painting from the romatic era that illustrates it and it also makes out the cover of Blood Fire Death by Bathory.

8. Dark Recollections: who did the artwork for Cd?

Crucifyre: A graphical artist called Stefan Hansson did the artwork. He usually works with computer game graphics but I made quite clear that that was nothing at all that we wanted. We looked at a lot of stuff by Hieronymus Bosch, HR Giger and Larry Carroll. The cover is Stefans visualization of the concepts I gave him. I think he did a great job.

9. Dark Recollections: anyone in the band involved in other projekts?

Crucifyre: Yes, but only on a semi-active level. If they’d be more active with their other projects they would have to choose.

10. Dark Recollections: Crucifyre a studio only band, or do you get to play live?

Crucifyre: So far we have played a handful of gigs and we want to get out and play as much as possible. Right now we are looking for a booking agent. So if there is anyone who reads this that want to book the best “old school” sounding band around, get in touch!

11. Dark Recollections: if you could pick a perfect touring line up, what bands would you pickto tour with?

Crucifyre: My favorite bands that still are around were at the height of their career in the eighties. If I could chose any band it would be great touring with a classic band like Autopsy, Sodom or something like that. Otherwise I am hoping that we’ll be touring soon with our friends in Tormented, Interment and Nominon for instance.

12. Dark Recollections: any merchandise available from the band?(list items and prices)

Crucifyre: We have some t-shirts with the nun left, baseball style shirt, red with dark blue sleeves. The motif is a nun in a pentagram doing something naughty with her crucifix. They are 17 € in Europe and 27 $ worldwide, including postage. We’ll be doing some new stuff soon.

13. Dark Recollections: any last words, comments? thankd for the interview

Crucifyre: Thank you Wilhelm for having us and supporting Crucifyre! Buy Infernal Earthly Divine – the vinyl will be out on Blood Harvest by next week. Hope to see you on tour! Hail Satan!
